Before entering the world of cinema, Padmakumar worked in the construction sector as a building consultant. His interest in visual storytelling and communication led him towards television, where he began his media career as a presenter with Doordarshan.
He subsequently became associated with leading Malayalam television networks, including Asianet and Kairali TV. His presenting work included programmes such as Paithrikam, Samvadam, Veettuvisesham, Suprabhatham, and Shubhadinam. These early experiences established his presence in television and laid the foundation for his subsequent journey into filmmaking.
Although M. B. Padmakumar initially aspired to become a filmmaker, his entry into Malayalam cinema came through acting. Several established directors recognised his potential and brought him into their films as a character actor, opening an unexpected but formative chapter in his cinematic journey.
Over the years, he has appeared in approximately fifteen Malayalam films, working with some of the industry's respected filmmakers. His notable performances include roles in Jayaraj's Ashwaroodan (2006), A. K. Lohithadas's Nivedyam (2007), and Shaji N. Karun's Kutty Srank (2009), in which he portrayed Neelan.
For Padmakumar, acting became an invaluable education in filmmaking. His experience in front of the camera allowed him to understand performance, visual composition, scene construction, direction, and the collaborative nature of cinema from within.
Having gained this experience, he eventually chose to take a temporary break from acting to pursue his long-standing ambition of becoming a filmmaker. This decision marked a significant turning point in his creative life, leading directly to his directorial debut, My Life Partner (2014).
In 2014, Padmakumar made his directorial debut with My Life Partner, a film exploring same-sex emotional intimacy, commitment, and the social attitudes surrounding human relationships. The film received the Second Best Film award at the 45th Kerala State Film Awards, with Padmakumar recognized as its director, while Sudev Nair received the Best Actor award for his performance in the film. The work earned widespread recognition for its sensitive treatment of a socially significant subject.
He followed this with Roopantharam (2015), an exploration of human perception, sensory experience, relationships, and individual identity through the lives of a visually impaired man and a hearing- and speech-impaired boy. The film was selected for the Indian Panorama section of the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), held in Goa in 2016.
His subsequent directorial work includes Telescope (2017) and Token Number, continuing his interest in human relationships, social realities, and the complexities of individual lives. For Padmakumar, filmmaking is an ongoing exploration of people, their experiences, and the worlds they inhabit.
Padmakumar's interest in storytelling extends beyond cinema into literature and creative writing. As an author and screenwriter, he explores human relationships, psychological conflicts, social structures, and the inner lives of individuals.
While literature offers him the freedom to explore thoughts and emotions through words, screenwriting allows him to translate those experiences into visual narratives.
His approach to writing is rooted in an interest in human behaviour and the contradictions that shape everyday life. Whether through a literary narrative or a screenplay, his creative pursuit remains centred on discovering and expressing the many dimensions of human experience.
Padmakumar approaches filmmaking as an integrated art form, involving himself in several creative aspects of the process, including story development, screenplay, direction, editing, and sound. For him, these are not merely separate technical departments but interconnected elements that define the emotional and artistic identity of a film.
He sees filmmaking much like a painter creating a canvas — selecting, blending, and bringing together different colours to achieve a unified expression. The screenplay establishes the foundation, direction gives life to the vision, editing shapes its rhythm and narrative flow, and sound adds depth to its emotional landscape.
His experience as an actor gives him an additional perspective as a director. Having experienced the vulnerability and creative demands of performance himself, he understands the actor's process and the subtle nuances through which a written character becomes a believable human presence on screen. This understanding informs his approach to working with actors, helping them move beyond delivering lines to discovering and inhabiting the lives of their characters.
